When Life Kicks You

“When life kicks you, let it kick you forward.”

That’s what legendary basketball coach Kay Yow said. That’s what she lived. That’s what she taught. Now, it’s part of her legacy. http://kayyow.com/

I first met Coach Yow my freshman year as a member of the basketball team at the University of North Carolina. She was coaching at Elon College. A couple years later, she moved to North Carolina State University and spend 34 years there until a 3rd recurrence of cancer ended her career and life in 2009.

Nike published a full-page ad in the Raleigh newspaper after her death. Here’s an excerpt:

You’re a wonderful and extraordinary lady, Sandra Kay Yow. And when we say wonderful, we mean wow. And when we say extraordinary, we mean extra ordinary. And when we think of those pink ribbons, we think they should be like a blanket that covers everyone and shields us and reminds us all to be wonderful, extraordinary, dignified, powerful, strength giving heroes just like you. See what you’ve done.

Most recently, she inspired me to bump it up a notch. I’ve just resumed running after nearly a year off due to a stress fracture in my foot. I took up the challenge of the 5k Run4Kay as part of the Women’s Final Four in nearby Indianapolis.

Without her inspiration, I doubt I would have pushed myself to the 3-mile mark yet.

So, see what you’ve done again, Coach Yow!

Life kicks us. No question about that. The interesting question is, what are you doing about it?

Do you pay attention?

Do you gather information?

Do you learn?

Do you take another approach?

Do you explore your options?

Do you find a way to improve?

Do you get stronger?

Do you get better, and in so doing, make the world better?

“When life kicks you, let it kick you forward.”

And Kick Your Business Forward, Too.

Here’s to your joyful and powerful performance,

Dr Pat R sig
